For years, Botox has been used as a cosmetic procedure to reduce or remove face wrinkles, making people look and feel as if they magically traveled back in time 10 years.  Botox works by paralyzing the nerve cells, preventing them from sending signals to the muscles.  Botox is a very effective cosmetic procedure, but it could also potentially have a new use.

Now researchers are finding that Botox could serve as a way to decrease and prevent stomach cancer.  According to Merck Medicus, the vagal nerve contributes to the growth of gastric tumors.  Researchers are now discovering that, just like the cosmetic treatments, if the nerves were to be paralyzed, it could suppress the cancerous tumor.

Using Botox to prevent cancer would not only be a new and improved treatment, it would also be much more cost effective and less physically and mentally draining for the patient.  Although the botox treatment is a large step in the right direction for finding a reasonable treatment for cancer, it does not rule out the use of chemotherapy.  Actually, it has been found that combining the Botox treatment alongside chemo is the most effective treatment because it makes the cancer cells much more vulnerable. “After working in the cosmetology field for so long I am pleased to see the new discoveries for the uses of Botox and its potential as a treatment for stomach cancer,” says Dr. Dale Isaacson.
